My favourite author Ruskin Bond’s stories are drawn from his life experiences combined with his flights of fancy. They are interesting, have a flavour of adventure, thrill and a great sense of humour. They keep me hooked either with a smile on my face or have me sitting on the edge of my chair! His language is rich and his stories are an inspiration for us children to enjoy English literature.
His Puffin publication, ‘Here Comes Mr. Oliver’ is a story about Mr. Oliver, a Scouts master and a math teacher. Friendless, the only one who he loved very much, was his dog called Hitler. One day a tragedy befell Hitler- a panther pounced on him and took him away to the forest…never to return. Seeing him sad and lonely, some children from his school got him a new dog. They soon became best of friends and he was cheerful and happy once again.
The story teaches us that even if we lose someone dear to us and we are full of sorrow, life gives us a chance to bestow our love again. We need to move on while we carry warm memories….
